Courtney PineHull Jazz Festival 2009

August 23 to August 30

Now in its 17th year, Hull Jazz Festival brings some of the biggest names in jazz to the new world-class Hull Truck Theatre, plus a jazz summer school and associated events at venues throughout the city.

Hull’s “strengthening jazz festival” (Jazzwise) is among the highlights of the UK jazz summer and the headline stars announced for 2009 include Ray Gelato and the Giants, Omar Puente’s Cuba 50, Empirical, Iain Dixon, Alex Wilson, Courtney Pine and Carol Kidd, plus a host of local and regional artists.

A big free outdoors Jazz Festival event will take place over the weekend of 12 and 13 September as part of the Clipper race and Freedom Festival celebrations, and further information will be announced in due course.

Hull Jazz Festival Summer School

As part of the Jazz Festival we are delighted to join forces with East Riding College and Access to Music to offer a three day Jazz Summer School, to take place in Hull between 25 and 27 August. The summer school will help you to understand, improvise and perform jazz standards and to develop compositional skills resulting in performance of standards and own composition. There will also be a number of band sessions to develop music rehearsing and performance techniques, a masterclass from saxophonist Iain Dixon, and a performance opportunity at the Hull Truck Theatre for the all attenders. For further information please contact Martin Jones at martin.jones@eastridingcollege.ac.uk or telephone 01482 382 506.
